How much USD should I bring to the United States?

Although cards are king in the United States, it is still recommended to bring some cash when travelling to America.

The amount of cash you should bring really depends on your travel style and where you are planning to travel in the country. Tipping is also a big part of American culture and you will need to use cash to do so.

Cash vs Card payment

Card payments are widely accepted almost everywhere in the United States, including small businesses, cafes and taxis. You can use contactless payments such as Apple Pay or Google Pay as well.

However, carrying some cash when travelling to the United States is a good idea, as you might need it for:

  • tipping
  • small local stores or street vendors
  • parking meters or public transport in some cities
  • buying food from food trucks or outdoor markets

How does tipping work in the US?

Tipping can be confusing if you're not used to it. However, it's important to bear in mind that tips are very important in the United States. The reason is quite simple: waiters‘ and bartenders’ wages are generally very low (between $2 and $5 an hour), so tips are used to supplement their income.

To determine the amount of the tip, a percentage is generally applied to the total amount of the bill. In restaurants, a standard tip is usually between 15 and 20%. You can go beyond this limit to reward good service.

Also remember to tip when you take a taxi. This is usually between 10 and 20%, and apps usually make it easy to tip your driver after your journey.

If you're not sure of the amount you should tip, just add 20% to your bill. If you're paying on card, tipping with cash is always appreciated as you can be sure that 100% of it will go to the server.

Make sure you always tip when necessary. It's very rude to leave a restaurant without giving a tip. Some establishments will not hesitate to remind you to tip if you have not done so. In very touristy areas such as NYC or Los Angeles, restaurants sometimes automatically apply an 18-20% tip to your bill. So be sure to check before you pay.

How much cash should I bring with me?

The amount of cash you should bring with you really depends on your travel style, the activities you are planning to do and the places you want to visit.

When estimating your budget for a trip to the USA, we advise you to apply 20% of the total amount to determine the amount of cash you will need. This will allow you to tip when you take a taxi or go to a restaurant, for example, to make small purchases (snacks, cafés, etc.) and to be able to pay if your card fails or in places that do not accept other forms of payment.
