How much MYR should I bring to Malaysia?

The amount of MYR you should carry when travelling to Malaysia depends on the length of your stay and the type of activities that you're planning to do.

Malaysia is considered to be a budget-friendly destination compared to other countries. Food is quite cheap and you can enjoy a delicious meal for 5-7 NZD (15-19 MYR). Public transport and taxi are also affordable which make easy to travel the country. Many attractions such as beaches or temples are free or at a very cheap price.

Cash vs Card payment

Malaysia is becoming more cashless, especially in big cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. Most hotels, shopping malls, supermarkets, restaurants & cafés will accept card payment which is very convenient for travellers.

However, it is always advisable to have cash on hand to be able to pay in certain situations. This is particularly the case for :

  • to buy street food
  • at night markets
  • in small shops
  • in certain rural areas
  • to use public toilets (usually MYR 0.50-1)
  • to take the bus in small towns
  • to make donations in temples

Daily budget estimates

The average daily budget depends on your travel style and preferences. Malaysia is known for being not expensive, so it's easy to please each type of travellers.

A budget traveller would have a daily budget of approximatly 115 MYR (45 NZD), which includes accommodation such as hostels or guesthouses, food in local markets, public transport and free activities such as temples or beaches.

The daily budget for a mid-range traveller would be of ~300 MYR (120 NZD), which includes private Airbnb or private rooms in a hostel, food from street food stalls and some restaurants, public transports and occasional taxis and some paid activities and guided tours.

You have to keep in mind that the cost depends also of the region of Malaysia you are travelling to. In big cities, prices tend to be higher than in rural areas.

How much cash should I bring with me?

Whether you're travelling to Malaysia for work or on holiday, it is always a good idea to bring cash with you. The amount needed really depends on the activities you're planning to do and your travel style in general. If you're planning to explore rural areas, carrying cash is mandatory to avoid stressful situations where you wouldn't be able to pay.

In general, travellers tend to use card payment 70% of the time, and rely on cash for the remaining 30% of their expenses. For a week in Malaysia, we recommend bringing 500 to 1,000 MYR (200 to 400 NZD).
