How much IDR should I bring to Indonesia?
The amount of IDR that you should bring with you when travelling to Indonesia depends on many factors, such as:
- length of your stay
- planned activities
- spending habits
However, here are some general guidelines which could help you budget your trip to Indonesia.
Cash vs Card payment
Cash is King in Indonesia in many situations. It is therefore mandatory to bring IDR in cash when travelling in Indonesia.
Even though some places accept card payment, you will have to use cash for taxis and local transports, to access some tourist attractions, to tip or if you're travelling to rural areas and smaller towns.
Bargaining is also a thing in Indonesia, and it will be much easier for you to get a cheaper price if you're planning to pay by cash.
It is easy to find ATMs in Indonesia, but they usually have low withdrawal limits which can put you in tricky situation. They can also apply $3 - $10 fees on every transaction.
Therefore, bringing cash with you is a great solution to be more flexible and enjoy your stay smoothly.
Daily budget estimates
Life in Indonesia can be fairly cheap if you stick to local restaurants or avoid the more touristy attractions. You can also opt for public transport to get around and save on your budget.
On average, it is estimated that the daily budget of a tourist travelling to Indonesia varies between $20 and $100.
You'll be at the lower end of the scale if you opt for youth hostels, local restaurants and free or low-tourist activities, while public transport and scooter hire are also good ways of getting around.
On the other hand, you'll be in the high bracket if you choose to dine in restaurants serving Western cuisine, opt for tourist activities and book private drivers for your trips.
How much cash should I bring with me?
It's highly advised to bring IDR with you when travelling to Indonesia. You can exchange your travel money from one of our bureau de change to make sure you enjoy the best exchange rates and have enough IDR when arriving in Indonesia.
We usually advise travellers to carry IDR 500,000 - IDR 1,000,000 (NZD 50 - NZD 100) to have enough cash to cover your taxi from the airport, an international SIM card, some snacks and expenses upon arrival.
