How much THB should I bring to Thailand?

The amount of THB that you should bring with you when travelling to Thailand depends on many factors, such as:

  • length of your stay
  • planned activities
  • spending habits

However, here are some general guidelines which could help you budget your trip to Thailand.

Cash vs Card payment

Even though card are becoming more accepted in big cities, cash is still king in Thailand.

Having cash on hand is therefore essential if you are to have a pleasant stay and avoid any stressful situation in which you are unable to pay.
ATMs, of which there are many in Thailand, generally apply additional charges to each transaction.

We therefore advise you to exchange your NZD for THB before your departure to take advantage of favourable exchange rates and avoid the high fees charged by Thai exchange offices once you arrive in Thailand.

Daily budget estimates

Daily budget in Thailand depends on the activities you're planning to do and your lifestyle. Even if living in Thailand can be pretty cheap, your budget can double depending on the places you decide to eat or the type of transportation you chose.

On average, travellers spend from 1,000 THB to 4,000 THB per day (50 NZD - 200 NZD).

How much cash should I bring with me?

It can be difficult to have a good estimate of how much cash you should carry when travelling in Thailand, as the amount depends on your lifestyle and the activities you're planning to do.

Bringing the equivalent of NZ$280 (5,000 THB) should be enough to cover a taxi from the airport to your hotel, an international SIM card, street food and small expenses.

Immigration can request travellers to show 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family in cash.

Depending on the length of your stay in Thailand, you can easily estimate your budget by multiplying each day by the average daily budget of 2,500 THB.
