How much VND should I bring to Vietnam?

The amount of VND that you should bring with you when travelling to Vietnam depends on many factors, such as:

  • length of your stay
  • planned activities
  • spending habits

However, here are some general guidelines which could help you budget your trip to Vietnam.

Cash vs Card payment

Vietnam is heavily relying on cash payment. Therefore, you will need to have VND in cash with you to be able to pay in street vendors, small shops and local markets. You can use card payment in hotels, major restaurants and malls but a 3% fee is usually applied.

ATMs are usually applying high fees on each withdrawal as well (usually 20,000 to 50,000 per transaction).

We highly advise you to exchange NZD to VND before travelling to Vietnam to avoid high exchange rates, fees or being stuck with no payment method available.

Daily budget estimates

Living in Vietnam is pretty cheap compared to New-Zealand, which makes the country a great destination to explore. The budget of your trip in Vietnam depends on your lifestyle and the activities you're planning to do, but travellers spend on average 500,000 to 3,500,000+ VND each day ($35 NZD - $250 NZD), including transportation, food and hotels.

How much cash should I bring with me?

It is mandatory to carry VND in cash when travelling in Vietnam, as it is the main method of payment used in the country. Although you can book most of your accommodation online, you will still need cash to pay for activities or food in Vietnam. Considering that the average traveller is spending around $30 NZD per day, you should bring with you approximately 500,000 VND for each day spent in Vietnam.
