Some facts about the Chilean Pesos
Denominations of the Chilean Pesos
- Notes: 1,000 CLP, 2,000 CLP, 5,000 CLP, 10,000 CLP and 20,000 CLP.
- Coins: 1 CLP, 5 CLP, 10 CLP, 50 CLP, 100 CLP and 500 CLP.
The first Chilean peso was introduced in 1817. A 5,000-peso banknote is called a “gabriela,” for the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral design found on it.
As you may know, the locals have their own slang terms even for their currency. In Chile the Chilians have adopted the following terms : “luca” for 1,000 pesos, “quina” for 500 pesos (borrowing from the Spanish “quinientos,” or 500), and “gamba,” which means “prawn,” for 100 pesos, but has more recently been attributed to 100,000 pesos.
